I've had surgery on L4/L5, and am now due for L5/S1.
To reduce pain, stretches are a must. Laying on your back:
Legs out flat, pull one knee to chest, hold for 15-30 seconds, swap. 3 sets.
Legs out flat, use a belt or rope looped under foot (across instep). Keep leg flat, use hands to pull leg up. 15-30, 3 sets.
Knees bent, rest ankle of one leg on knee of other. Pull sideways knee to chest. 15-30, 3 sets.
Knees bent, arms down by sides. Lean knees to left, then to right. Hold 15-30 each side, 3 sets.
I also strongly recommend an inversion table. Nothing helps me as well as mine. Best money I ever spent.
