Given how incredibly multi-disciplinary cancer research tends to be, what do you think are the primary advantages to teaching students general "cancer science" over teaching specialized researchers and setting them up to collaborate extensively?

From my own experience on the latter, it can come down to there is a huge difference between "A compound does X, and may be useful to treat cancer" and "A drug dies X and can be used to treat cancer"

And those differences include things like off-target liabilities, on-target liabilities, bioavailability, manufacturability, and sometimes patentability. Things that matter much less preclinically.
