I'd say, not as an expert and just as a student who's spent a bit of time looking into it, a lot of the time when you buy cheap goods you're not truly looking at the long term cost, for you or for the manufacturers/laborers working in below average conditions, and that, as Patagonia shows, when you choose to look at clothing as more of an investment and you make sure to buy things that will be around in the long term, you can have more sway in consuming in a more conscious way, as each purchase holds a bit more sway from a consumer standpoint. Also when you think a t-shirt or whatever might have a somewhat exorbitant cost, it may be reassuring to think of the environmental efforts that stand behind that cost, as the shirt is representative of not only the actual cost of the good but also the marketing efforts as well as the environmental efforts of the firm. Also it is helpful to think of the good as existing in the second hand, and that when you purchase it, someone that could not afford it may get it later on. I hope this helps, cheers.
