What is CyanogenMod's relationship with AOSP? Is it hard to integrate changes from "upstream" like 4.2, 4.3, etc? Do you keep in contact with official Android developers?

I'm a programmer, and I'm interested in contributing to CyanogenMod. How can I do that, and what kind of help is most needed? What do I need to know to start contributing? Is there an issue tracker or code review tool? What tool do the developers use for communication?

Also, what is the structure of the code repositories? I saw lots of different repositories under CyanogenMod on GitHub, and I don't really know how they're all related and what each one is for.

How many people contribute to CyanogenMod?

I saw that CyanogenMod only accepts bug reports for Release Candidates. Why is that? How does the team keep track of bugs in nightlies?
