It does happen, and previous donors are likely to get priority status for a transplant if I'm not mistaken.

fellow iga patient here, diagnosed in high school. I'm 32 now with a gfr around 30. I also happen to be a 3rd year medical student so I might be able to answer some questions if you have any. Blood pressure control is key to slowing the damage so that should be your number 1 priority. My nephrologist also suggested omega 3 (fish oil) because at least one study suggests benefit and there's very little risk associated with taking it.

Matching closely is relatively unimportant in kidneys with the drugs they have these days. Of course a better match is preferred, but not really necessary. This is in contrast to, for example, bone marrow which requires a nearly perfect match.
