Very inspirational stuff OP. I'd like to add that I got phantom pain a couple weeks after I had the top of my finger amputated, the nerves might start firing again after they heal a bit. I hope you don't get that though.
My brother lost his leg and struggled quite a bit with phantom limb pain. Good luck and speedy recovery!

My dad was a teacher for about 35 years and he still bumps into students from that time. He taught in South Africa and Swaziland and a couple of years ago he bumped into a student he taught back then. He recognised my father instantly and had nothing but nice things to say about him. He even called him Mr slapadabase.
I think it speaks volumes how good he was at his job and he always remembers his past students but he has that dad memory.

It's bad at the beginning but according to my brother it fades with time. He says he feels it time from time these days - 7 years on.
