Did you serve in Iraq by any chance? Been around any of the burn pits they dug early on in the invasion (circa 2003-2006ish, not sure exactly when they stopped)? If so, those could be related. If you want more info I have some links about it I can share after I get on my break.

Other people who served and were exposed to those burn pits (which contained things like tires, old batteries, etc and used jet fuel as accelerant) are frequently developing rare-for-their-age cancers now. Those burn pits released black particulate matter in the air along with carcinogens like benzene. Really awful stuff but as of yet theres no "proven" link between burn pit exposure and cancers (it's being researched currently) - but considering many of the chemicals known to have been released by the pits are known carcinogens it's not exactly a big logical leap.

Also worth mentioning that military service in general is itself an increased risk factor for cancer... they probably don't tell recruits that though lol.

Bout to clock in so I have to be quick, but start at burnpits360.org for more info. Anyone else reading this, they are a charity and are funding research into the effects of burn pit exposure and helping those affected by it

Here's a wiki page about the phenomenon. As far as we know the right conditions have only occurred in this one place. But there may be others that we've yet to discover evidence of.

Thanks for answering. Grosses me out like crazy but I couldn't resist asking out of morbid curiosity. Certainly not something many people can say they've eaten!
