It’s a surprising hurdle to connect you to the right 911 operator when you call for help. Back when phones were all wired it was easier as each number was (eventually) associated with a physical address that would be transmitted with the number when you called 911.

I’d guess this resignation is about linking your phone to your home address to send that along with whatever physical location the cell company has.

It’s indescribably frustrating to know someone is in desperate need of help, but you’re going off some rough description of where they are. And maybe they got that wrong.

The system just isn’t designed to take a GPS fix from your phone and send it via a dispatch center to some mapping software on a fire truck.

For values of “lots” that approach “everyone” as a function of “you got a ticket in the mail because your phone moved along I-5 at an average speed in excess of the posted limit.”

Don’t go to an amusement park, or any other large gathering then.

Have had much better luck on cruise ships than conferences or Disney World with coming home sick.
