how much extra time does it take with a series to go back and do the dialogue that gets missed while filming the show outdoors like it is?

Have you ever watched "Iron Horse" by John Ford? If so, your thoughts on redoing that as a talking film? I don't think it can be ~ not without screwing it up. (Your comments about occasionally having too much dialogue where things could be done with a look made me go watch it again)
