Just want to start by saying that if you oppose NSA surveillance, you should pick up the phone and call your representatives in Congress right now. A vote on the Amash amendment is happening in the next few hours, and we need as many calls in support as possible to sway the vote.

You can find your legislator's phone number at any of these links:

Woop that's me! I wrote more about exactly that story and how I was threatened under the DMCA here here - the tl;dr is that Motorola found out I had written software to unlock their phones when I was in college and had their laywers threaten me via mail. I was 18, but the awesome EFF (and the particularly amazing Jennifer Granick) gave me completely pro-bono help and helped pushed back against their threats.

Latest info is that Amash bill vote won't happen until between 6pm and 730pm EST. Which is good: that gives us 3 more hours - call in now!

Couldn't agree more with Kyle's answer on this. I think there's three good really good reasons for promoting the ability for people to "unlock/modify/repair" everything:

  • The right to repair is important for sustainability and protecting the environment.
  • Making modifications, repair etc legal means that people can learn about how their devices work. That makes them better consumers.
  • By modding/repairing/unlocking we can find the security holes in our devices before the bad guys do.
