Hello Gary, I'd personally like to hear your thoughts on dietary supplements (either in general, or some specific ones that you have any opinions on). I realize this may not be your expertise, but you have enough experience researching diet in general that some motifs could be applied to some nutraceuticals (such as Spirulina, Astragalus, or Maca; which are effectively food products. I edited in hyperlinks to systemic reviews I have personally conducted, and if you hold animal studies with any regard I would mention that Spirulina looks very nice; poor human evidence currently though...). It is just a different side of health preservation, and probably one with just as much (if not more) diluted and screwy evidence as the whole sugar issue.

I work at the website of Examine.com where we compile much information on the topic of supplementation, and many people who come to us are those who are also following ketogenic or paleolithic diets. I haven't followed your work as frequently as I would have liked, but I was wondering if you had any influence on what these people are seeking or whether its just correlated (people interested in health happen to be interested in both of us, independently)

Yes, I would love to hear these thoughts.

There is tons of evidence that the hate towards insulin, inflammation, or basically any anabolic hormone or cytokine in the body is bad for people in a current state of metabolic distress or metabolic syndrome (and in all honesty, the evidence of insulin being bad for ill people not currently in a state of clinical significance is pretty sound); these same anabolic and pro-inflammatory factors are quite inert or perhaps beneficial in healthy persons though, making blanket hate against insulin (whether intended or an accidental side-effect of fandom) very much a grey area.

Edit: Additionally, the definition of 'health' as it applies to this issue is pretty vague as well; I'd love to hear Gary's thoughts on what even constitutes the state of health; so far, the best description I can come across is 'not really screwed up in any way to impair inter-organ function'

Especially thoughts on the state of hepatic glycogen depletion, since that does effectively negate a ton of adverse effects of the diet (fructose and carbohydrate in general) against insulin sensitivity and NAFLD, at least for a bit; it makes the anti-carb issue much more difficult to apply to athletes.

No offense to Taubes at all if he is reading this comment, but if your associate is actually a primary Alzheimer's researcher (graduate or PhD level) than his opinion should be held in higher regard than Gary's.

Yup.

Although if something (that may or may not be an analogy for underlying causes of metabolic syndrome) if holding you face down on the sidewalk and repeatedly bashing your face into it, it would be nice to (at that point and that point only) replace it with a pillow.

Max evar was 535 for a single (belted, no suit, at around 190) although I would hazard a guess I weakened and can only hit 495 or something (180 or so bodyweight, same conditions)
