The "new" AMAs are a joke. They are always just an obvious plug for the celebrity's latest project, and are usually done via phone through Victoria, meaning it's just yet another phone interview the celebrity does that day to promote their new project. The questions are obviously cherry picked, and the duration is usually an hour or less, hardly enough time to answer questions with any depth or substance.
When a celebrity comes and does an AMA and it's clearly them, it rightfully gets hugely popular (see the original snoop dogg AMA).
Protip to celebrity publicists: if you want reddit's user base to actually get behind your celebrity or his/her project, sit them down at a computer with their account logged in, and give them a few hours to have a freewheeling discussion with fans directly. Also, putting the title of the project in the AMA is a bit tacky. Anyways, let's stick to Rampart, people.
