I think the biggest thing is to just pay attention to changes from a baseline. Every mental illness is different, so someone with anxiety or depression will look delifferent from bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.

Other than just knowing the person well enough to see changes, you will want to look out for changes in sleep, appetite, and general social behavior (withdrawal, being extremely social) are going to be warning signs to pay attention to.

If you need anything, it looks like you are close to my area of Kansas. This cold snap has to be pretty miserable. How are you dealing with the cold?

If I was starting college again, knowing what I know now, I probably would have gone this route instead of becoming a therapist. Not because I think that I would love the work that much more, but because I would get paid that much more. There is definitely a need for it, especially in more rural areas.
