Corneal ulcers and infections would be the most common issues. You can also cause neovascularization of the sclera, which is an increase in the number of blood vessels in the white part of your eye. Your cornea gets its oxygen from the air and tear film so a contact lens hinders that gas exchange to some degree. Plus if you get any sort of bacteria under the lens then it is a great environment for it to grow and isn't as easily flushed out by your natural tear flow than with out a contact lens there. Long story short it's pretty gross.

What do you mean by weakens the eye? It thins the cornea but with a mild prescription of about 1.25 I wouldn't expect any negative consequences. If you really don't like the idea of Lasik though then you may want to look into an implantable contact lens. It is basically a lens they place in front of your eye's natural lens to correct any refractive error.

How do feel about the current trend of general ophthalmologists dying as a field, and along the same vein, the increase of the scope of practice for optometry.
