The Catholic media reaction is understandable, but what do you think is driving the weird conspiracy-minded reaction from self-proclaimed secular conservative voices?

I think - despite his sometimes shaky relationship with the truth - we have to take a commentator like Bolt at their word that they genuinely believe that Pell has been fitted up. He's certainly not saying it to win the favour of his blog commenters.

Whether it's for any of the reasons you list (quite probably a combination of all) believing in a vast conspiracy that goes all the way to the top of Victoria Police and the DPP does require one to possess a highly conspiratorial worldview.

That such a worldview is not uncommon in conservative media circles shouldn't come as a surprise - see Soros, climate change hoaxes etc. - nor should their moral vacuum - see Iraq, Manus, Nauru. Perhaps the fact that it did come as a surprise said more about our own naivety at how detached modern conservatism has become from reality in the past few decades. Maybe the most surprising thing was how abjectly that detachment was laid bare.
