Equipment probably matters very little in comparison to funding that enables athletes to not have other jobs, world class training facilities, coaches, psychologists,nutritionists, etc.

I agree that games based entirely around luck/dice rolling are no fun. Personally, I don't enjoy games like chess and go where they are completely skill based either. I find that I agonize over each move too much and end up not having fun. I think a good board game is one where the better player will win most of the time, but the worse player still wins occasionally. Also, it should be teachable in 15 minutes, but ideally have no skill cap.
