Was it awkward asking your boss permission to post this AMA?

What are the most important skills to have before attempting to make a game? I have an idea for a game I've been wanting to make for years but I don't have a good enough computer. Would it be a waste of time if I jumped into this project using an engine like Unreal 3? As I don't have any experience making either 2d or 3d games.
