I guess I need an ELI5 on this cos I just do not understand why we are constantly having to battle different versions of this kind of policy making. Why does it feel like we are always having to fight our own government? Frankly I'm tired of reading about it, and that's probably what they're hoping for.

I don't see this getting answered because there isn't one. I am in this same boat, did a lot of research on my options and frankly there are none. The middle class got really screwed for 2018 more than usual even. The "silver" plans got more expensive than any and coverage losses bringing them so close in price to the gold that it doesn't make sense to do anything else but gold. They also drastically increased what they consider "affordable" in 2018 too, so you won't qualify for any assistance.
I am now at a point in my life that I need to consider changing jobs just for different health insurance. Small businesses get exceptionally screwed. If working for a company under 100 employees, you will not find anything better on the open marketplace than your employer sponsored plan.
Either get a new job for a bigger company, a state job, or a company that realllllllly takes care of their employees and pays all or the vast majority of the premiums. OR, don't have health insurance at all and take the penalty at tax time. Really sad that as a healthy 35 year old male working in IT, I actually had to consider this option.
Massive health care reform or leaving the country are the only things that will save the disappearing middle class.
