Princess Mononoke (as well as Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo and Paprika by Satoshi Kon) would definitely change opinions (in one way or another) to those who have no proper knowledge of Japanese animation and the Anime world.

Those films (as well as Spirited Away) are rather serious and beautifully made films that bring positive aspects to animation and shouldnt be taken as something "stupid"

I recommend Sprited Away 千と千尋の神隠し for the colourful imagery and for Disney fans

or Princess Mononoke もののけ姫 for people who thinks Anime is a joke and loves an emotionally-driven storyline
