Besides all the science mumbo jumbo and the 10's of millions of dollars that goes into it, probably that our base is next to the southern most active volcano in the world (mt. erebus) and it spews crystals that can only be found 2 places in the world, here being one of them.

Everyone here obsesses over the soft serve ice cream machine we have for some reason, it's called "frost boy". Everyone gets up in arms when it's not running or if it's broken
