I started a small online business that a few years ago had net income significantly higher than what I make at my current job for a few months. Over the few years after that, I see the returns diminish steadily no matter what I did as my relatively small target market shrank/was saturated.

Not to be a downer, but what are your plans if the same happens with your business?

How often do people berate you about your job contributing to climate change, and equate you with a mass murderer or a cannibal who considers small children a delicacy? Also, do you slap these people, and if not, why?

I agree with the advertising reasoning to a point, but my thought is that vying for maybe 100 cases (I think that's a very optimistic estimate, I've only (knowingly) dealt with 4 same sex couples in the last ~2 years, two of which involved a same sex relationship where one spouse was now in a same sex relationship) out of the thousands of cases filed in my county, too much additional expenditures for advertising just isn't an effective use of funds.

I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just urging caution on your estimates of how much work you're going to get out of It. Even by your estimate, that's only $50k/year.
