I think that's a big one for sure. People also assume that alcoholism and mental illness are always a factor and that doing something to help these people won't make a difference. What I've found in the short time I've been doing this is that many people are held back by external factors that are well beyond their control. One of the biggest obstacles I've heard about is the difficulty in obtaining proper identification. That's something that I think most people take for granted but when you're in a transient situation you may not have access to a birth certificate. Another one that really opened my eyes was the fact that employers here know the addresses of most of the shelters in town and many homeless feel that listing one on a job application might as well be a death sentence for getting that job. Hi Becky!

I loved the report on 60 Minutes last night. I work for a nonprofit doing homeless outreach. In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception the public has about what it means to be homeless?
