I went through the same thing when I first wanted to contribute to Open Source projects. What worked for me was to look at the older issues and find some that were claimed but where no progress was made.

Here's one at freeCodeCamp that I've been meaning to go back and fix. It's really just a challenge that needs its description edited and a couple of tests added. Would you be interested in working on this? I'd be happy to walk you through the process if you need some help along the way.
