Don't knock it if you don't know it. I travel a LOT for work, and coming from a smaller airport I have to change almost every time.
ATL is literally the easiest airport to connect via. It's laid out very logically, there is a great inter-terminal shuttle train and in no case do you have to walk very far if you don't want to.
Actually leaving/returning to the airport is a pain in the ass on par with most big airports.
The real WTF of American airports is JFK imo. Parts of it are literally a national embarrassment.

MFM - Magnetic Force Microscopy - is a thing. I used to work in a place that was pretty paranoid, and we were worried about this a bit. With increased density (and HARM -heat assist) and other stuff, I rather doubt it's been possible for a long time now.
But in theory --- you can do exactly as you describe.

We used degaussers (multi-axis) and hole punches, but the really scary stuff always got disintegrated; the entire drive ground essentially into sand AFTER degaussing and punching.

Holy Cats!
I used to run a little website called bianca, and we had a whole community of Looners... A sub war broke out between the poppers and the (??), where the poppers liked, obviously, the popping part, whereas the other group was interested only in the expectation or anticipation of the pop.
All of this extended to champagne corks and other sorts of unexpected yet anticipated popping type objects.
Wow.... And I thought maybe the Looners were limited to only a few people back in the early days of the web.
Was it common elsewhere or did you dig that deep?
