I'm not Alice, but I am a wheelchair user. For me--and, I dare say, most would agree--our chairs are tools that allow us mobility and independence to work, socialize, shop, and adventure. Medical professionals are notorious for assessing quality of lifewith a disability quite negatively, and the term "wheelchair bound" implies imprisonment. In fact, it is freedom. No problem! It's a huge question and every time I think about it, it gets raveled in with larger issues of social stratification and mobility (made thornier by racism and sexism), national economic policies, globalism and corporate responsibility, and broad-based cultural values ... just to begin...

I worked in higher ed for most of my career and agree with your assessment that it's become "capitalist credentialism." What would your top three changes be for overhauling our education system--k-12, college, or both?
