This is why people should buy helmets with MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System). It basically allows the outer part of the helmet to slip and rotate about the inner part of the helmet which is attached to your head. This provides the same or better impact protection as a regular helmet, but it allows your head to slide on things instead of digging in and breaking your neck. It also deals with off-axis impacts far better.

It's particularly important in mountain biking just because there's a lot of different obstacles for you to nail with your head when you bail. For the $100 a Giro Chronicle MIPS helmet costs, there just isn't a good excuse not to have one.
