Down Periscope is probably the most underrated (I’m not even kidding). The absolute worst, most cringeworthy, piece of crap movie is Crimson Tide.

OP said he was and officer. Unless he was the Supply Officer, all other officers follow a similar progress of starting in the engineering divisions and working their way through qualifications (and seniority) to Officer of the Deck watch stations and larger divisions on the boat.

OP will have to answer for the class of boat(s) he was assigned to.
