It took my mother over a year to seek a further or second opinion on my ear issues. My GP said I had a waxy build up, then one day black liquid came pouring out my ear. I was finally referred to hospital where I was again misdiagnosed and had a pointless operation. Finally, I was given a correct diagnosis and it turned out I had a tumour (non cancerous) in my ear and an infection in my mastoid bone and inner ear.
I definitely won't leave it so long before getting more or a different opinion in the future should I have a medical issue. It's just at the time I trusted my GP, and figured he knew best.
