The "ray of hope" we kinda cling to is the "Second Chance Act" (edit: maybe it was some other act similarly worded?) and "Compassionate Release Program" which I personally haven't studied up too much on, but I have seen and read that these supposedly are the reason first time offenders can (apparently) cut their effective served sentence a decent chunk.
Do you happen to know anything about those? Or are these, like you touched on above, something more directed to people with much longer than a year sentences?
