In hindsight, if there was one thing you could change about how you dealt with the situation, what would it be?

There is no way this is getting a satisfying answer.

This will be drowned in all the other comments, but we actually made sure to meet and get to know our kids' teachers. We then gave them explicit permission to hug or comfort him if he needed it, he's a kid that thrives on affection.
