What was it like working on Fast Food Nation? Despite having the same director, was it different than Boyhood in any way (besides the whole 12 year shooting schedule, etc.)?

I've always been curious with how cinematographers become interested in pursuing a career as a cinematographer. So my question is at what point, and for what reason, did you want to become one, and how did you prep yourself for commercial work in movies? I hope this question makes sense as it does in my head.
