What does constitute an emergency?

Generally, "imminent threat to life or limb" (meaning death or disfiguration). Discipline of a child tends to fall under parental rights, in many states, which means a call to CPS and lots of paperwork (ie. Most likely not an emergency, unless you simply said someone was beating the snot out of someone else and left the parental relationship out of it... Yes, I agree, kinda sad).

All I remember was how bad I was shaking.

Adrenaline can be a scary thing... that's "fight or flight," unharnessed right there. I've been in similar "scary" situations, and the uncontrolled shaking is rather wild (you will get similar feelings from an epinephrine injection, should you ever be treated for anaphylaxis... and, the feeling sucks. It's a much pronounced version of the shaking you get from a Novocaine shot at the dentist (which contains epi), for those that have not experienced it).
