Most fast food places have timers above the drive thru windows on the inside. They're trying to get people through as quickly as possible, hence the term "fast food". If you need a few seconds to situate everything, pull ahead away from the window or into a parking space, no one behind you wants to wait longer than they have to, they're hungry as well.

I had a similar, though much less serious thing happen to me. Almost the second I turned 18,my mother talked me into getting a couple cell phone contracts and a direct TV account set up under my name, all of which went unpaid before too long. Then when I went to college, I signed up for 2 credit cards, not intending to use them (they were giving away free stuff... I was poor lol) and found out much later they had been sent to my home address and been maxed it by my mother for groceries and things. I'm 29 now and the last of the stuff is finally dropping off next year.

Things like that come down from corporate, it's literally something the employees are required to do. I'm guessing they don't want to ask you to do it either. At the end of the day, it takes 2 minutes and it makes everyone's lives easier. They don't have to hear you complain you don't want to do it, and you don't have to argue why you shouldn't have to.
