There is ice cream out in stores now that uses cultivated dairy rather than animal dairy. It's from a company called Brave Robot. I looked up their ingredients and this is how they label it:

WATER, SUGAR, COCONUT OIL, SUNFLOWER OIL, NON-ANIMAL WHEY PROTEIN, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF MALTODEXTRIN, NATURAL FLAVOR, VANILLA BEAN SEED, CALCIUM POTASSIUM PHOSPHATE CITRATE, SALT, DISODIUM PHOSPHATE, CAROB BEAN GUM, MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES.

And then in the bolded allergen section below it say "Contains: Milk Protein". You can see it here. So it will still be labeled for people with allergies. But I think the plant based label/term should become standard to differentiate something that is only made of plants vs something that is vegan (and might have lab made animal products).

For microbial fermentation - can this protein source be made to taste exactly the same as meat? The main takeaway I hear from a lot of meat eaters is that they would be willing to switch once it tastes exactly the same. I'm kind of wondering if we will ever get to that point though. Especially in a way that can be mass produced at cost parity.

Wow, that sounds very promising. Thanks for the reply.
