I've been in I.T about 13 years, the sort of Desktop Support, leading to Server Support, now I do specialist projects for media companies. Not bad pay but whenever a school leaver asks me if it's a good thing to get into, NOOOOOO I think the software developers have a much better life though I understand it can be very stressful but on the operations (server builds maintenance desktop infrastructure) In general the most undervalued team around.

We can literally save the company some days where some jackass in management decides he wants to bolt on some incompatible server then this brings down half our file servers there we are 3am scrambling to fix things. 9am same manager "not very good guys some people said there was some outages last night"

We sometimes work with project managers who are paid around £1000 a day, we do all there work for them as they haven't even got a clue what the technology behind the project there managing does. Who gets all the praise, certainly not us.
