I remember sitting in Blooms a Jewish restaurant in London. I used to go for the salt beef sandwiches. I saw an elderly Jewish guy eating his meal quietly to one side. No big deal, then I noticed the tattoo on his wrist. It did make me think that yes the places really did exist in real life not just in books and on TV screens

i used to drink in the same pub and went raving (25 years ago) with 2 of the guys who were the first to be convicted of gay bashing in the UK. When I say the first, it was the first time that a British Judge had recognised that the crime was sexually motivated. Again they used a knife. I read the details years later in the Guardian after I lost touch with them.

They got caught because a banknote had blood on it. (they targeted a gay guy up on Hampstead Heath) The details were horrific. They had both been pals for years. The instigator had a pathological hatred of gay people. He was'nt too bright. His parents gave him £100 a week to stay away, a lot of money 25 years ago. He took any drug that he could, he was the first person I knew to smoke crack.

The second one grew up in care the parents died.He was a big lumpy guy who liked to talk with his fists and only motivation was to get drunk. Together they were a walking nightmare.

The instigator turned evidence on his pal. In my heart I know he was the prime mover. You don't hate people without a reason not like that.

They got a decent stretch I forget how long maybe a 6 the other a 4. The instigator turned into a crackhead, then a heroin addict, then a methadone addict, then a corpse. I heard from one of the old crowd.

Ignorance kills, creates a climate of hate, not for everyone but a perceptible percentage. Change is slowly coming. Now in the UK it's a lot better incidents still occur but no were like any of the previous frequency.

Any way that's my two bobs worth. Keep the faith
