Violating probation is itself a new crime in most states, here is how it works in plain english:

in his case he was sentenced to 25 days in jail, but the sentence was put on hold (suspended) and instead he promised to behave for x amount of time (probation), the judge agreed to let him go so long as he didn't get into new trouble (violate probation).

he got in trouble again and boom! original sentence place.
