In all honesty, it terrifies me that I could lose him but he brings me so much joy (while simultaneously irritating me out of my mind) that it would be a disservice to both of us to not be together. He is kind, sweet, intelligent and caring. Everything any person needs in a SO.

If I may, again, jump in here and spout info from the paper I did. There are 4 types of SMA recognized. Each with different levels of severity and different onset times and life expectancies. As the number associated with the type goes up, the severity goes down (i.e., Type 1 is most severe)
Type 1: Onset birth (can be detected prior to birth), life expectancy is low. Most infants die within a year though some children have gone on to live longer.
Type 2: Onset 12-18 months, life expectancy is around the teens
Type 3: Onset 18months- 3 years, life expectancy normal
Type 4: Adult onset, normal life expectancy.
Types 2 children will usually be wheelchair bound by about the age of 8 or 9 with Type 3 children walking into their teens or beyond before a wheelchair is necessary. Type 4 adults rarely require a wheelchair until they become elderly.
Now, I did this paper 3+ years ago, so some of this stuff could have changed but this is what I had back then.

I had to do a paper about a disease/condition that affects one body system. I chose SMA because my husband also has SMA II. One of the things I found and it is so very true is that people with SMA are remarkably intelligent, outgoing, funny and just a delight to be around. My husband is all of these things and so are the friends of his who also have SMA. My guess is Donovan fits all of those things as well.
EDIT: Changed 'children' to 'people' because it's a more relevant word.

My husband has SMA as well. I understand the tired thing. We met on the internet (playing City of Heroes) and he asked if I had a VoIP server and if he could come in. I just wondered why this odd guy wanted to come talk to me. He explained that his hands got tired from playing and it was hard to type. This was in November of 2004. :)
