I too have been to Iran. A couple of times actually (went with my friend and his mother and sister). In my opinion, the people that live in Iran are even nicer and friendlier than the persians* who live in my country.

I'm not Hooman so I can't answer for him, but my parents are like yours.

They are not too keen of the government, but the amount of joy they get out of being there for 1-2 months from visiting relatives, eating good food and watching the beautiful nature overweights the "hatred" towards the government. You'll most likely never ever be in touch with any authorities if you go for a vacation and their politics hardly affect you if you don't live there.

This is a personal opinion obviously, but the fact that your father hasn't gone back to Iran in despise of the government seems like bullshit to me when he has relatives over there. Unless he's a wanted man..
