Fellow forensic EE here - attorneys where I practice wont pursue what they know will be an empty chair in China. There have been rare exceptions where we were able to determine that the importer might be able to cough up some restitution, but its rare.

Fellow forensic EE here - we had an arc flash event on the roof of a hospital where a worker was injured pretty badly. Turns out one of the bolts on the bus duct housing was energized because an earthquake I want to say a year or so back had compromised the insulators.

Best part: hospitals facilities chief wrote emails to hospital management stating bluntly that a seismic inspection was needed after the earthquake. Hospital promptly fires him, he saves the emails, the incident happened like 6 months later. Facilities guy approaches plaintiffs atty. They got paid

Correct. I'm actually at a conference in DFW where many product safety experts are talking about this very thing. New EU regulations are now going to include cybersecurity requirements as well as changing the law such that if the manufacturer isnt in jurisdiction, the manufacturers agent can be held criminally liable.

There are plenty of forensic structural guys. Look at some of the larger firms: Exponent, ESi, Envista, Jensen Hughes, Rimkus, there are a ton.

You mean there wasnt a dude that was a firefighter for 40 years saying "smells electrical to me..." as he notes its 430 on a Friday? Bonus points if they talk about concrete spall as prima facie evidence of arson...
