Yes, it does. I've never heard of this, and I work in academia.

To get hired as an associate professor, you need publications. No or few undergrads have peer reviewed pubs.

Edit: and the more I think about it, the less it makes sense. An associate professor is generally a professor who has gained tenure. No undergrad has tenure by default. The original story is complete BS. Maybe, but it's a big MAYBE, the kid was a lecturer, but for a grad level course? I doubt it. Maybe he taught A class, like a single one, but no way that he was the instructor of record.
