My mother is deaf and after the first time I did this, I never did it again.

We were arguing in the kitchen and after she won, she went downstairs. I yelled, "fuck you bitch," and she was back up the steps in a second asking me what I had said.

For a few years after that, I was convinced she wasn't deaf.

Not OP, but my mother is deaf and I wanted to put in my two cents on your second question.

I often get shit for having not seen all of the classic kids movies my generation gets nostalgic about. Growing up, closed captioning wasn't all that common, so when we rented movies as a family we had a limited selection.

It wasn't until the early/mid 90s that closed captioning was pretty much standard.
