Exactly right, the character played by Missi Pyle is supposed to be based on this one commentator, Nancy Grace. She was once a county prosecutor, and decided to create a TV personality around being tough on criminals, sometimes laughably so.

When people talk about the glory days when lots of people studied things like liberal arts with little direct practical benefit in seeking employment, they're talking about a time like the 1950s and before WWII, when less than 10% of Americans went to college. Students were disproportionately upper middle class and wealthy. It's fine to study French literature when you can go back home and work for the family store or business.

We're now at a point where 68% of new high school graduates are in college. By definition, some of those students are going to be below the median in academic achievement. You don't have the luxury of spending four years in something that isn't exactly job applicable, because you better believe that some of the other 68% of students will. They are going to take that job that you might have gotten.
