What's up with the 747 on the runway for like 10 minutes in Die Hard 2? Did no one during production say, "you know, this scene is pretty silly...?" The runway must be 15 miles long.

The bends is a result of breathing air under pressure (with SCUBA or other gear). Specifically, the nitrogen in the air dissolves in your blood, then forms bubbles when the pressure drops back to normal. No breathing == no bends.

This disconnect could be a huge part of the problem. Imagine applying this idea to just about any other profession... and it seems absurd. Software engineers are often called upon to create cost estimates for projects, large and small... architects give you construction cost estimates... any manufacturer can tell you to the penny what their per-unit costs are... etc.
