Nice in theory, but are you going to drive out to the local farmer's market every time you need milk? Or are you going to discover you're out of milk at 8pm on Sunday and run to Walmart to pick it up and do the rest of your shopping.
A few people you know might do this. The rest of the world is focused on price and convenience. Convenience means being able to do the rest of your shopping all in one place at any convenient time of the day.

The vast majority of Americans have probably never tasted milk from a local dairy farm. Most of it was purchased at a Walmart or an Albertson's or whatever their large chain supermarket happens to be.
