it looks like it was john hughes.

some quick google detective work pointed me to a book called "produce your own damn movie" by lloyd kaufman who says the screenplay was around for a while and everyone loved it but wouldnt let the farrelly brothers direct it as they had never been directors. he heard john hughes was involved in the writing but didnt want to take any credit and he didnt know (or didnt write about) why.

maybe there was an argument over who should direct it?

im sure a cancellation looks bad on the rep and they were hanging up on you because the punishment for that is probably something like a "hit on their scorecard" whereas a cancellation could cost them real money if they are working for a bonus based on % of accounts retained vs lost.

no excuse at all, just a completely random explanation from someone who has worked at a call center (not comcast)
