This exact same thing happened to me, except I was entirely sober and no one was home, so it was even more confusing since it took a little longer to click in. Put my key in the door, and my inner monologue was something like this:

"Huh, that's weird. Guess I didn't lock my door when I left. I'll just put my stuff down on the kitchen table. Wait, where did that lamp come from? Who's fucking shit is this all over my kitchen table? Who the fuck was in my apar-.... oh shit".

Pretty sure that had someone been there, I would have given them an awkward "Umm... hey", rather than a couple bullets center mass.
