My personal 3 favorites are: Checkless chess, http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checkless_chess
Bobby Fisher chess, http://www.chessvariants.org/diffsetup.dir/fischer.html
and Capture, (it probably goes by other names) Which I can't find a link for, though explaining it will be easy:
All pieces can be captured, including the king
If a player can capture the opponent's piece they must.
If a player can capture more than one opponent piece they can choose which one to capture.
The game ends when one side has lost all its pieces, or when no more moves can be made.
The player with the least number of pieces at the end of the game wins.

Has a chess AI ever surprised the chess community with a novel tactic? For instance is there a 'deep blue opening' or something of that sort?
