Having worked on modern satellites, that fact that it kept beeping is very impressive.

Space is still very nationalistic. So jobs go to locals. NASA only hires US nationals. ESA hires only from country that donated money, and the more money you donate, the more jobs you get. Hence, why there are a lot Italian in ESA at the moment.

Also there are more jobs directly related to engineering than astrophysics. Usually astrop is done at affiliate universities.
