it's clearly correct for him to take that gamble. he's essentially bankrupt as it is, and losing his fiancee and his life as he knows it as things currently stand. if you're giving him a 50/50 chance to either get everything back and be rich, or be only marginally more screwed than he already is, he has to take that bet. going bankrupt with $50k in debt probably isn't that much different from going bankrupt with $500k in debt. he also mentioned suicide; killing yourself with $50k in debt is no different from killing yourself with $500k in debt (except to your creditors). this has nothing to do with "not learning his lesson"; it's the objectively correct play to take the gamble.

(yes, he made a lot of clearly incorrect plays to get into this mess)

it seems like he's using his knowledge of the math to convince himself that he's better than all the other compulsive gamblers out there. understanding math but not understanding the real world is a dangerous thing.
